Fruit flies lay their eggs on the skins of fruits and veggies. A few days in a warm home and they will hatch. Wash all your produce with a commercial veggie wash or vinegar and organic soap and you will eliminate 99% of fruit flies. I wash it all, regardless if it came from grocer, backyard or farmers market and I never have a problem since instituting that routine!
